California has it all. From the beaches and bluffs along the Pacific Ocean to the majestic Sierra Mountains to ancient redwood groves to its deserts, there is something for everyone. I could probably devote my whole photography career to shooting only California and never get bored.
I have spent a lot of time backpacking in the High Sierras especially in Kings Canyon National Park. In 2005, I spent nineteen days hiking 150 miles along the John Muir Trail only to be stopped by snow at 9,000 feet a mere thirty miles from the trek’s end atop Mt Whitney. Not to be thwarted in completing that hike, I returned the following year, climbing Mt Whitney from its eastern access in a 17 hour, 21 mile, 6,200 foot elevation gain day. You don’t have to go backpacking to experience the beauty of the Sierra Mountains however. Simply visit Lake Tahoe and go for day hikes in the nearby Desolation Wilderness area.
